Village Center Master Plan

The Village of Wilmette is conducting a planning and design process to develop a comprehensive Village Center Master Plan. The goals of this plan are to:

• Create a clear, documented and shared vision for the future of the Village Center that “sets the stage” for funding strategies, capital improvement programming, new development, and retention/attraction of area businesses and supports transit-oriented development.
• Create and test a range of alternative development concepts and strategies that enhance and revitalize adjoining businesses and blocks within the Village Center.
• Develop an optimal short and long-range land use strategy and development framework for the Village Center.
• Attract land uses and development more compatible with the goals, needs, infrastructure, and “character” of the community and build a critical mass of energy and activity that will catalyze surrounding businesses and encourage future mixed-use redevelopment in the Village Center.
• Establish a framework for future changes to development regulations that emphasize high quality, sustainable site and building design.
• Create a set of planning and urban design tools and codes that allows private sector creativity while enhancing predictability for the community.
• Maximize the transit-oriented nature of the Village Center by improving traffic/parking efficiency while establishing better venues and linkages for pedestrians and bicycles.
• Identify historic and cultural resources and fold their reuse and preservation into a sound sustainable redevelopment strategy.
