The University of Notre Dame + The City of South Bend

Notre Dame + South Bend, Indiana

Lakota has worked with the University of Notre Dame for over a decade, creating important places for students, faculty and the community to come together both on and off campus. In the heart of the campus, in front of the Hesburgh Library and its iconic “Touchdown Jesus” mural, Lakota turned a wind-swept area into Hesburgh Library Plaza–an appealing spot with planters, benches and bistro tables where people gather and collaborate. On the southern edge of campus along Edison Street Lakota designed Irish Green of Notre Dame, a new 16-acre park and playground that connects the campus to South Bend’s Northeast Neighborhood.

It’s been an incredible change. [The project has] really blurred the line between campus and community, and it’s really given a sense of common ground.Gregory Hakanen, Director of Northeast Neighborhood Redevelopment for Notre Dame

Lakota’s award-winning Northeast Neighborhood + Eddy Street Commons Master Plan reached beyond the campus, remaking a deteriorated and underdeveloped area into a dynamic neotraditional neighborhood that includes the now-built 24-acre mixed-use Eddy Street Commons and mixed-income Triangle Neighborhood.
