The Village of Libertyville recently completed a collaborative planning process with community residents and stakeholders to update its Comprehensive Plan – The plan outlines important policies and strategies related to land use and development, downtown, infrastructure and capital improvements, housing and neighborhoods, open spaces and natural resources, transportation, historic preservation, quality of life, and community sustainability and resiliency.

The process for developing the Comprehensive Plan provided an unique opportunity for community residents and stakeholders to participate in the planning process and communicate their ideas regarding Libertyville’s future.  The project website was just one important way in which local citizens accessed information for this project.

The Lakota Team understood the immediacy and importance to update the Comprehensive Plan. Communities today must respond and be resilient to constant economic challenges, plan for needed investments in various infrastructure systems, ensure the adequate and equitable distribution of community services, promote quality-built environments, and consider the integration of natural resources and open space in the enhancement of citizen health, recreation, and quality of life.

The Comprehensive Plan capitalizes on Libertyville’s existing assets, including its traditional downtown core and neighborhoods, quality of life amenities, schools, proximity to transit, and community services—while also considering planning strategies for sustainable growth, enhancing community appearance, diversifying its employment base, and adding new recreational and open space amenities.

Additionally, the Comprehensive Plan builds upon recent efforts by the Village—including the recently adopted Downtown Transit Oriented Development Plan and Economic Development Strategy, the historic resources survey of downtown, and the on-going Stormwater Master Plan—to ensure that cutting-edge techniques and a holistic planning process result in a compelling guiding document for the Village to plan, grow, and prosper.
