OverviewSan Antonio, Texas has long been recognized for its efforts in preserving its significant historic and cultural resources, ranging from its most important buildings, such as the Misión San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) to the downtown River Walk and Art Deco skyscrapers to the various revival styles and Craftsman-style bungalows that make up the fabric of the surrounding neighborhood residential areas. Over the decades, in collaboration with many organizations, preservation advocates, and San Antonio citizens, the City’s preservation efforts have resulted in the designation and landmarking of 24 historic districts and over 2,000 individual buildings, sites and structures. The City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation, in partnership with a 32-member Steering Committee representing various stakeholders and organizations, is embarking on the development of its first citywide Strategic Historic Preservation Plan. The purpose of the Plan is to create a long-term vision for strengthening and enhancing the City’s current historic preservation program. With this Plan, the San Antonio community will build a stronger preservation ethic by recognizing that historic preservation will play a fundamental role in shaping the City’s urban form and character, contributing to the City’s overall economic development, and sustaining a high quality of life for all residents and visitors.
